Kerala black pepper, traded for centuries as Malabar pepper, still has one of the best-known reputations in the spice world. Here's what that means for a bulk buyer.
Kerala and Malabar pepper
Kerala has been a pepper-growing and trading region for over two thousand years, and "Malabar Pepper" is a registered Geographical Indication (GI) for pepper from this region. Today, Karnataka also grows a large share of India's pepper, so Kerala isn't the only source, but Malabar remains the name the trade knows.
Where it's grown
In Kerala, pepper is grown widely in the hill districts, including Idukki and Wayanad, usually on vines trained up shade trees alongside other crops like cardamom and coffee.
What bulk buyers should check
- Grade: ungraded, garbled (cleaned) or bold Tellicherry grades. See our Malabar vs Tellicherry guide.
- Density: heavy, mature berries carry more flavour.
- Dryness and cleanliness: well-dried, without mould, stones or excessive dust.
- Aroma: sharp and fresh when crushed.
