Moving from retail-quantity purchases to a real wholesale supply chain is a big shift for a growing spice retailer. Here's a practical framework for evaluating suppliers and building the relationship.
How to Evaluate Wholesale Suppliers
- Do they provide grade specifications, not just "cardamom" or "pepper" as a generic listing?
- Will they send a sample before you commit to a bulk order?
- Do they offer lab-tested documentation (Certificate of Analysis)?
- Is pricing transparent and updated regularly, or vague and negotiated case-by-case with no baseline?
- What's their MOQ, and does it fit your storage and cash flow?
Grades & Quality Specs for Retail Packs
For cardamom, retail-facing brands generally do best with 8mm or 8.5mm grades – the size and aroma read as premium on-shelf. For black pepper, washed and cleaned stock looks better in a transparent retail pack than unsorted whole pepper.
MOQ & Volume Discounts Explained
Most wholesale suppliers structure pricing in tiers – a baseline rate for small trial orders (10–50kg), then increasing discounts as you scale into 100kg, 250kg and 500kg+ territory. Ask for the full discount table upfront rather than negotiating from scratch every order.
Payment Terms & Logistics
First orders with a new supplier are typically upfront payment or COD. Once you've built a track record, many suppliers (including us) will discuss NET 15/30 terms for repeat business.
Building Long-Term Wholesale Relationships
Consistent order timing (e.g. monthly or quarterly) and clear communication about your grade and volume needs tend to earn better pricing over time than one-off opportunistic orders.
Example: Retail Margin Calculation
If wholesale cardamom costs ₹800/kg and you repackage into 50g retail pouches (₹40 landed cost per pouch including packaging), selling at ₹120–150 retail gives a healthy margin while remaining competitive against other retail cardamom brands.
