Not all Indian cardamom is grown equal — and we say that as people who grow it. Altitude, soil and climate shift essential oil content in ways a lab can measure and your nose can confirm. Here's the honest regional picture, from a farm in the middle of it.
The Idukki High Ranges
The Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats run 900–1,500m up, with volcanic soil and a southwest monsoon that arrives on schedule every June. Our farm in Rajakumary, above Munnar, sits at roughly 1,000m in this belt. Pods grown at this altitude mature slowly and concentrate their aromatic oils — high-range lots typically test at 8–10% essential oil.
Other Kerala Zones
Wayanad and Kottayam grow good cardamom too, generally at lower elevations. The pods are real and clean, but oil content typically runs 6–7.5% — noticeably milder when you crack a pod side by side with high-range stock.
Outside Kerala
Cardamom from Sikkim, Himachal and the Northeast is mostly a different plant entirely — large (black) cardamom, a smoky spice for savoury cooking, not comparable to Kerala's small green cardamom. Some plains-grown green cardamom exists, but at under 600m elevation it usually tests around 5–6% oil.
The Numbers, Side by Side
| Region | Altitude | Typical essential oil |
|---|---|---|
| Idukki high ranges (Rajakumary–Munnar belt) | 900–1,500m | 8–10% |
| Idukki lower zones | 600–900m | 7–8% |
| Other Kerala (Wayanad, Kottayam) | Variable | 6–7.5% |
| Plains-grown | Under 600m | 5–6% |
Why the Price Premium Is Real
Idukki cardamom costs 30–50% more than lower-grown stock, and the reason fits in one sentence: you're buying aroma per kilo, and high-range pods carry up to twice the oil. It's not a regional branding exercise — it's chemistry you can have tested.
How to Verify What You're Buying
- Ask where the stock is actually from. A trader who can't name the belt is telling you something.
- Ask for the lab report. Essential oil percentage doesn't lie. We provide reports with bulk orders.
- Crack a pod from the sample. High-range cardamom announces itself immediately — sharp, warm, spicy-floral. Plains stock smells politely mild.
