Idukki Cardamom: Direct from the Cardamom Hills

Idukki Cardamom: From Our Farm in the High Ranges
Idukki district grows most of India's small cardamom, and the reason is geography: the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats, 900–1,500m up, volcanic soil, and a monsoon that arrives on schedule. Our farm is in Rajakumary, above Munnar, right in the middle of this belt. This page explains why cardamom from here smells different — and what we actually do between the plant and your order.
The Place
Rajakumary sits at roughly 1,000m elevation in southeastern Kerala. The southwest monsoon (June–September) brings months of 70–85% humidity, and the hill soil is dark, mineral-rich and full of forest humus. Cardamom is a fussy, shade-loving plant — and this is one of the few places on earth where it's genuinely at home.
Altitude is the detail that matters most. Above 900m, pods mature slowly and concentrate more cineole and terpinyl acetate — the compounds you smell when you crack a pod. Below 600m, the plant still grows, but the oil content and aroma drop off noticeably.
Why High-Range Cardamom Is Premium
The numbers
Essential oil content is the honest measure of cardamom quality, and it's lab-testable. High-range Idukki pods typically test at 8–10% oil. Plains-grown cardamom usually runs 5–6%. That gap is the entire reason buyers pay 30–50% more for Idukki stock — you're buying aroma per kilo, and there's simply more of it.
| Origin | Altitude | Typical essential oil | Aroma |
|---|---|---|---|
| Idukki high ranges (Rajakumary–Munnar belt) | 900–1,500m | 8–10% | Bold, complex, spicy-floral |
| Idukki lower zones | 600–900m | 7–8% | Moderate, balanced |
| Kerala plains | Under 600m | 5–6% | Mild, flatter |
How it's farmed here
High-range cardamom is small-farm agriculture — a few hectares at a time, shade-grown under the tree canopy, tended by families who've done this for generations. It's labour-heavy by design: pods on one plant ripen at different times, so pickers return to the same plant again and again through the season. There is no machine that does this well.
Our farm's part in it
We used to be black pepper farmers — one harvest every December. Switching to cardamom changed everything: three to four harvests a year, with the big August peak in between. We've written that story here. Today we harvest, dry, and grade on our own land, and for bulk volumes we buy from a small circle of neighbouring high-range farms we've known for years — farms whose drying and sorting we can personally vouch for, because we can walk there.
From Plant to Your Order
- Picking: pods are hand-picked at ripeness, plant by plant, through the season
- Drying/curing: controlled drying over 24–36 hours to lock in colour and oil
- Sorting: we discard heavily — immature, hollow and damaged pods are pulled out by hand
- Grading: sized into mm bands (6–7mm up to 8.5mm+), the same grades on our wholesale page
- Packing: vacuum-sealed food-grade packs, harvest date printed on every bag
- Dispatch: tracked shipping pan-India; export documentation on request
Standards & Paperwork
- Graded in line with Spices Board standards for Kerala green cardamom (Extra Bold / Bold / Superior)
- FSSAI and GST registered
- Lab reports (oil content, moisture, foreign matter) available for bulk orders on request
FAQ
Is all Idukki cardamom the same quality?
No. Altitude and drying practice vary farm to farm — high-range pods (900m+) typically test 8–10% oil, lower zones 6–8%. Ask where the stock is actually from; we'll tell you, because ours is from Rajakumary and farms around it.
Why is Idukki cardamom more expensive?
More oil per kilo, plus real labour: hand-picking through a months-long season, hand-sorting, controlled drying. The premium buys measurable aroma, not a story.
Is your cardamom organic?
Our farming is traditional and chemical-minimal, but we are not certified organic. If certification matters for your market, tell us on WhatsApp and we'll advise honestly on options.
How do I verify I'm getting genuine high-range cardamom?
Two ways: measure the pods (we grade in millimetres), and ask for the lab report on oil content with your bulk order. High-range stock shows up in the numbers.
