Before committing to a bulk order, every wholesale buyer should know how to sanity-check a cardamom sample. Here are five simple tests you can do without lab equipment.

Test 1: Aroma

Scratch a pod lightly with your thumbnail and smell immediately. Quality cardamom releases a sharp, warm, spicy-floral aroma right away. A weak or musty smell suggests low essential oil content or poor storage.

Test 2: Pod Appearance

Look for deep, uniform green colour (for green cardamom grades). Yellowing, brown spots, or a bleached look point to sun damage or poor drying. Reject any batch showing visible mould – a white or grey dusting on the pod surface.

Test 3: Size Consistency

Measure a handful of pods with a ruler. A genuine 8.5mm grade should show most pods clustered tightly around that size, not a wide spread from 6mm to 9mm. Inconsistent sizing usually means the batch wasn't properly graded.

Test 4: Moisture

Flex a pod between your fingers. It should bend slightly and spring back, not crumble (too dry) or feel soft and pliable (too wet, risk of mould). Shake the pod near your ear – you should hear the seeds move slightly, indicating they're dried but not desiccated.

Test 5: Essential Oil (Taste Test)

Bite a seed from inside the pod. Quality cardamom delivers an immediate, pronounced tingling warmth on the tongue. A flat or barely-there taste usually means low essential oil content, regardless of what grade the pod size suggests.

When to Reject a Batch

  • Visible mould or insect damage
  • Strong musty or stale smell instead of spicy-floral aroma
  • Wide size inconsistency within a labelled grade
  • Pods that crumble to dust when flexed
  • No tongue tingle when the seed is tasted

We test every batch through third-party labs for essential oil percentage, moisture and foreign matter, and provide a Certificate of Analysis on request. See our Cardamom Grades Guide or browse Cardamom Wholesale grades.
