Supply, demand and the harvest
Indian cardamom is sold mainly through e-auctions conducted under the Spices Board of India, with auction centres at Puttady in Idukki and Bodinayakanur in Tamil Nadu. Prices respond to the size of the crop in Idukki, weather during flowering and picking, stock held by traders, and demand from domestic and export buyers. Guatemala is a major cardamom producer and exporter, and its crop also affects international prices.
Grade
Bigger, bolder, well-filled, green pods fetch more than small or light ones, because fewer pods in any harvest reach the top grades. The price gap between grades changes from season to season.
Season
In Kerala, the main picking season usually runs from around August into the winter months. Fresh-crop cardamom is most plentiful during this period. Outside it, buyers are drawing on stored stock. Whether prices are higher or lower at a given time depends on the year's crop and market conditions, so no month is guaranteed to be cheapest.

Cardamom prices change daily. The Spices Board of India publishes daily auction prices on its website, which is the most reliable public reference. Any fixed price you read in an article is likely to be out of date.
