Cardamom Grades Explained: Complete Wholesale Buyer Guide

Cardamom Grades Explained: A Buyer's Guide From the Sorting Yard
Every cardamom price you've ever been quoted comes down to three things: pod size, uniformity, and essential oil. We sort our own harvest into six mm-graded sizes, so this guide isn't theory — it's how the sacks actually get filled, and how to pick the right one for your business without overpaying.
How Grading Actually Works
The Spices Board's official grade bands for Kerala green cardamom — Extra Bold, Bold, Superior, Good — describe pod size and quality. We translate those into plain millimetres, because a millimetre is something you can check with a ruler when the sack arrives. Underneath both naming systems, the essential oil percentage is what you're really paying for: it rises with pod size and drives the aroma.
The Six Grades, Side by Side
| Grade | Size (mm) | Essential oil | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5mm+ Handpicked | 8.5–9 | 8–9.5% | Premium tea, gifting, Ayurveda, masala houses |
| 8.5mm Bold | 8–8.5 | 7.5–8.5% | Commercial masala, tea powders, exports |
| 8mm Green | 7.8–8.2 | 7–8% | Retail packs, hotels, dependable quality |
| 7–8mm Grade | 7–8 | 6.5–7.5% | Bulk retail, grocery, economical masala |
| 7.5mm Grade | 7.2–7.8 | 6–7% | Manufacturers needing tight size bands |
| 6–7mm Tea Masala | 6–7.2 | 5.5–6.5% | Chai blends, tea companies |
Which Grade Should You Buy?
The honest rule: buy big when the customer smells the pod, buy smart when the pod disappears into a blend.
Retail brand or gift packing
8.5mm+ or 8.5mm Bold. Your customer opens the pouch and judges with their nose. Big pods win that moment and justify your retail markup.
Masala manufacturer
8mm or 7–8mm. Once it's ground, nobody sees the pod — but oil content still matters. These grades carry real aroma at grinding economics.
Chai / tea blending company
6–7mm. In a blend with ginger, clove and cinnamon, a showpiece pod is wasted money. This grade exists precisely for you.
Hotel or restaurant kitchen
8mm or 8.5mm Bold. Consistent, clean, kitchen-ready.
Exporter or premium reseller
8.5mm+ or 8.5mm Bold — the grades that command premium prices in end markets.
Essential Oil, in Plain Language
Essential oil is the volatile aromatic content of the pod — roughly 4.5–9.5% by weight across commercial grades. An 8%-oil pod carries about a third more aroma than a 6%-oil pod at the same weight. That's the whole premium, in one number. It's lab-testable, and we share reports on bulk orders.
Why 8.5mm+ Costs So Much More
Because of what gets thrown away. Only 10–15% of a typical harvest makes the 8.5mm+ cut, and it's selected by hand — our sorters pull those pods aside one at a time. The rest of the price gap is drying precision and testing. You're not paying for a prettier label; you're paying for the 85% that didn't qualify.
Storage
All grades hold 12–18 months sealed, cool and dry. We vacuum-pack wholesale orders and print the harvest date on each bag, so your stock rotation is guesswork-free.

FAQ
What's the difference between 8.5mm and 7mm cardamom?
Roughly 2–3 percentage points of essential oil, which your nose reads as a much stronger aroma. 8.5mm costs more; 7mm is honest value for blends.
Which grade has the strongest aroma?
8.5mm+ Handpicked, at 8–9.5% oil. 8.5mm Bold is nearly there at a friendlier price.
Can I mix grades in one order?
Yes — lots of buyers take, say, 8.5mm for retail packs and 7–8mm for their masala line. One WhatsApp message, one combined quote.
How do I know the grade is genuine?
Measure the pods against the stated mm band, and ask for the lab report. We sell by numbers you can verify, not adjectives.
Do smaller grades taste worse?
Not worse — milder. In a multi-spice blend that difference mostly disappears, which is why blends are exactly where the smaller grades belong.
Can I change grades on my next order?
Of course. Start at 7–8mm, move to 8mm if your customers ask for more punch. Most buyers tune this over their first few orders.
