A Kerala Christmas hamper works best when it's built around what people actually drink and eat in December: filter coffee, tea, honey and the baking spices for plum cake. Add a cloth bag and a card, and it beats a basket of imported chocolates.

The core: something to drink

Every Kerala Christmas visit comes with a cup of something.

• Filter coffee powder for the family that drinks coffee after dinner.

Packing tips

• Keep coffee and cloves in their sealed pouches so the smell doesn't soak into everything else.
• A cloth bag or a reusable steel box looks nicer than plastic and stays useful after Christmas.
• Send by mid-December. Courier routes get crowded in the last week before Christmas.
